[Please note that all external links open in a new window]
The Department of English attracts exceptional students from a range of cultural, educational, and national backgrounds to participate in its excellent degree programmes. As an undergraduate at Queen Mary you will both contribute to and benefit from the atmosphere of intellectual rigour, social diversity, and open-minded discussion that make academic life here so exciting. At the same time you will receive close support from your designated personal advisor, and make friends for life amongst your peers and colleagues.
We recognise that choosing the correct degree course and university for you are amongst the biggest decisions you’ll have to make. This section will give you an idea of what you can expect from a single or joint-honours BA in English, about whether this Department is the place for you, and about the teaching and guidance you will receive here.

Before applying or taking up an offer to study at Queen Mary, you will no doubt want to have a look around the Department and explore the College campus. The Department of English warmly encourages you to take up the opportunity of attending Queen Mary’s annual undergraduate Open Day (held each spring), or else one of the official Campus Visit Days. Staff and student members of the Department will be available on these occasions to chat about life at Queen Mary. Alternatively you can arrange a guided-tour of the campus at a time to suit you. Details of forthcoming Open Days, Campus Visit Days, and Campus Tours can be found on the College’s Visit us pages. In the meantime why not take a virtual tour of Queen Mary’s Mile End campus?
