About us
The Department of English at Queen Mary, University of London is one of the country’s leading centres for literary study. The research and teaching interests of our staff span a wide range of periods from the classical to the contemporary, and we have an international reputation for our pioneering interdisciplinary work. This is reflected in the results of the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE). We have been positioned joint second across all English departments in UK universities. The intellectual culture of the Department is at once friendly and rigorous, making life here dynamic and varied.
We are one of the largest English departments in London, being made up of around 40 members of staff, and 850 students. The Department offers a range of qualifications including single and joint honours BA programmes, and postgraduate degrees at Masters and PhD level. All study takes place on our Mile End campus, situated 15 minutes away from central London.
The Department attracts students from all over the world. We greatly value the breadth of experience this diversity brings and the stimulation it offers to teaching and learning at Queen Mary. The Department works hard to ensure that our curriculum reflects the most recent developments in English studies, and that we teach more established areas in innovative ways.
