Excellent result for Queen Mary's English Department in the 2008 RAE

English at Queen Mary has been positioned joint second in the UK in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) - the nationwide assessment of the quality of research across all Departments in all UK universities.

Based on a grade point average score, English at Queen Mary ranked equal with Manchester and Edinburgh, second only to York.

Nearly three quarters (70%) of the research activity in the Department was judged to be of "world leading" or "internationally excellent" quality by the panel of top academics which drew up the assessment for all 87 submissions. Reacting to the outcome, Dr Christopher Reid, Head of English at Queen Mary, said: "We greatly welcome these results. They reflect the strength, range, and vitality of our work. The RAE has confirmed the Department's reputation as a centre of excellence for research, and as an exciting place to teach and study English."
