Studying at the Department of English, Queen Mary, University of London

Finance and support

To help you during your time at Queen Mary, the Department will provide a variety of personal and academic support.

 Financing your degree

Choosing the right degree programme not only involves making a decision about which city or university you go to. It also requires you and your family to make a series of financial commitments (in terms of fees, living expenses, or both) that can appear quite daunting at first. The Department of English strives to offer exceptional value for money to all students who enrol on its degrees, and strongly encourages applicants to investigate the additional bursaries and support packages that the College offers.

The Queen Mary website carries extensive information about fees and finance [new window], including details of the financial support that is available to both home and international students.

 Advisors

When you begin your degree programme you will be assigned a personal advisor. You will meet your advisor on your first day at university and remain in regular contact throughout your time here. Your advisor will give you the information you need to settle in at the start of your studies, as well as guidance on course options in the second and third years. They will monitor your progress in all your courses, and provide regular reports on how you are getting on. Should you experience any problems during your time at Queen Mary, your advisor is a familiar face who can help you to sort them out.

 Essay writing

The Department’s partnership with the Royal Literary Fund means that we are able to provide one-to-one tuition for students who wish to improve their writing. So whether you have a particular issue that’s causing concern, or you simply want to improve your written style, help is available. The Fellows who provide the tuition are all distinguished published authors and currently include the journalist, biographer and garden historian Jennifer Potter, the journalist, and short-story and screenwriter Rahila Gupta; and the novelist Ravinder Randhawa.

For more details about the scheme, and information on how to book an appointment visit the the Fellows' web pages [new window] website.
