English at Queen Mary
Studying English at Queen Mary gives you the opportunity to work in a world-class department renowned for its high-quality teaching and research. The Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) rated the Department’s teaching as excellent in its most recent review, and in the 2008 Research Assessment Exercise (RAE) English at Queen Mary has been positioned joint second in the UK.
Our degree programmes reflect the dynamism of the Department, and are designed to give you the freedom and flexibility that you need to develop your ideas and interests. In the first year you will build the key skills required for English at degree level by testing a variety of approaches to literary study, and reading a broad range of texts from the eighth to the twenty-first century. You will also complete a rigorous exploration of the works of Shakespeare. In the second and third years you create your own programme of study with the help of your advisor, choosing from a very wide range of options (broader than any other institution in London). Here your reading might take you from Beowulf to the Booker prize, and from Canterbury to Kolkata (perhaps via Canada), as you get the chance to explore the writers, genres, and ideas that excite your curiosity.
