BA (Hons) in English and Russian

Studying English and Russian gives you the opportunity to explore the connections and interactions between two literary and cultural traditions. As part of the degree programme you will receive intensive language training, and be instructed in the key concepts and techniques required to study literature. You will also engage with some of the main cultural traditions (both literary and non-literary) that inform the English and Russian speaking worlds, and investigate the parallels between the two. In your third year you have the chance to deepen your understanding of the language in context by spending a year in Russia.

Preliminary year

If you have little or no knowledge of Russian, you will need to complete a preliminary year of study. During this year you will complete the module:

Year One

Years Two, Three and Four

Over the following years you will develop your knowledge of both language and literature. In Russian, the core language courses will enable you to hone your linguistic abilities, while the range of optional courses open to you will provide the opportunity to encounter Russian culture, history, and literature. This will give you the skills and knowledge you need for your third year, which may be spent studying at one of our partner institutions abroad. Those who choose not to spend a year abroad will complete their degree in three years (or four years, if they have taken the preliminary year).

In English you will design your own programme of study by choosing from a list of around sixty courses in consultation with your advisor. These options enable you to study a variety of literary topics dating from the Classical period to the present day. Popular choices include:

Courses in both departments are run by experienced staff whose teaching and research has an international reputation.
