BA (Hons) in English and History
What is the relationship between a text and its context? How are writers affected by the circumstances in which they live? What influence do literary texts have on social, cultural, and political life? A degree in English and History at Queen Mary gives you the chance to reflect on these questions, and to consider how these disciplines relate to and inform one another. You will be trained in the key skills needed to study both subjects at degree level, and examine the interaction between writing and society in the periods that interest you most. The College's work in both History and English is internationally renowned, and you will have the opportunity to work with some of the world's leading teachers and researchers.
Year One
In the first year you will take a series of courses specially designed to give you the expertise required to study literary and historical sources:

Years Two and Three
In your second and third years you will develop your own programme of study by choosing from a long list of options after consultation with your advisor.
Typically about sixty courses a year run in each subject, enabling you to encounter a wide range of literary and historical periods and people. You are encouraged to link courses from both disciplines.
