BA (Hons) in English and Hispanic Studies

English and Hispanic Studies gives you the opportunity to explore the connections and interactions between two literary and cultural traditions. As part of the degree programme you will receive intensive language training, and be instructed in the key concepts and techniques required to study literature. You will also engage with some of the main cultural traditions (both literary and non-literary) that inform the English and Hispanic worlds, and investigate the parallels between the two. In your third year you have the chance to deepen your understanding of the language in context by spending a year in Spain or another Spanish-speaking country.

Year One

As part of your first year studies you will take a series of specially formulated courses designed to equip you with the skills you need for linguistic and literary work:

  • Introduction to Hispanic Studies
  • Reading, Theory, and Interpretation

You will also select one further course in English and one in Spanish from the following options:

Years Two, Three and Four

Over the next three years you will develop your knowledge of both language and literature. In Hispanic Studies, the core language courses will enable you to hone your linguistic ability, while the range of optional courses open to you will provide the opportunity to encounter Hispanic culture, history, and literature. This will give you the skills and knowledge you need for your third year, which may be spent studying at one of our partner institutions abroad.

In English you will design your own programme of study by choosing from a list of around sixty courses in consultation with your advisor. These options enable you to study a variety of literary topics dating from the Classical period to the present day. Popular choices include:

Courses in both departments are run by experienced staff whose teaching and research has an international reputation.
