Nineteenth Century Studies at the Department of English, Queen Mary, University of London

Nineteenth-Century Studies

The Department’s research in the area of nineteenth-century studies has been particularly concerned with the relationship between gender and historical consciousness. Staff have completed major monographs on woman’s literary creativity, the female sublime, and the representation of the Jewess in nineteenth-century culture. They have also been involved in editing texts by George Eliot and Vernon Lee, as well as a collection of essays on the latter. Complementing such work is an ongoing interest in the history of feminism and feminist interpretation. A major history of women’s writing has been co-edited by a member of the Department, and articles published on Wollstonecraft and Austen. We also have research strengths in the social history of ideas, and recent work has investigated the representation of nineteenth-century culture and technology on both sides of the Atlantic.
