Applying to Queen Mary for a PhD
The Director of Graduate Studies will consider all applications to study for the degree of PhD on their merits, taking into account past academic performance, and the availability of a suitable member of staff to supervise research. Candidates will normally have a good first degree (2.1 or above) in the broad field of the humanities, and will be in possession of (or anticipate completing) a relevant Masters degree that demonstrates distinction-level achievement.
The initial step for anyone who wishes to be considered for a place as a PhD student in the Department is to formulate a provisional research proposal. Once you have established some ideas about the research you wish to carry out, you should then contact the Department by emailing: Jerry Brotton, Director of Graduate Studies, who will discuss your research proposal with you, as well as help you to identify a prospective supervisor. In the meantime, you should also feel free to get in touch with any member of the Department whose research expertise match your own interests. Individual staff profiles can be accessed via our Staff pages.
Once you have developed a clear research proposal and have identified a supervisor in collaboration with the Director of Graduate Studies, you will need to complete the formal application process online
Applications will be considered at any time of the year. If you are interested in applying for a PhD studentship, either AHRC or one of the Queen Mary Principal's Studentships, please see our Funding and awards page for further details. Closing date: 5 pm on 31 January 2012.
