Masters (MA) programmes
The Department of English offers four Master of Arts (MA) programmes:
- MA in English Literature
- MA/MRes in Renaissance and Early Modern Studies
- MA in Writing and Society 1700-1820
- MA in Writing in the Modern Age
For information about how to apply for one of the above programmes, please see our section on applying to Queen Mary.
The Department is also involved with a further Masters programme:
- MA in London Studies [new window] run by the Department of Geography
Formal teaching on the Department’s MA programmes takes place over two twelve-week semesters, the first lasting from September to December, the second from January to March. You will take four assessed modules (two in each semester, or one per semester for part-time students), which are taught by means of a weekly two-hour seminar. At the end of each module you will write a 4,000-word essay, worth 30 credits towards (one-sixth of) your final degree classification. Together, your four assessed coursework essays are worth 120 credits towards (two-thirds of) your final degree classification. As well as the assessed modules you will also take a number of non-assessed modules, principally concerned with providing skills and knowledge to help you develop as a researcher.
Over the summer you will write a 12,000-15,000-word dissertation, worth 60 credits towards (one-third of) your final degree classification. Part-time students write the dissertation at the end of their second year. You will submit a dissertation proposal form in March, and once your topic has been approved, you will be assigned a supervisor. Your supervisor will provide guidance on reading, and comment on draft sections of your work. The deadline for final submission of the dissertation is normally in late August.
